More information about Almado - Miguel Torres

With its radiant ruby red color and delicate purple reflections, Almado - Miguel Torres immediately draws the eye to the glass. As soon as it is first swirled, a dense, multi-layered cloud of aromas rises. At the forefront is ripe blackcurrant, flanked by blackberry, black cherry and a hint of crème de cassis. Subtle roasted notes of dark cocoa, roasted coffee, cedarwood and fine vanilla join in, carried by a touch of black pepper and dried Mediterranean herbs.

On the nose, the wine appears deep, warm and inviting. In addition to the dark fruits, light notes of blueberry, plum and a hint of dried figs emerge. Discreet floral accents recall violets and dried rose petals. A fine, cool touch of graphite and damp earth adds tension and underscores its origin in the Valle de Maule with its mineral-rich soils and the interplay of warm days and cool nights.

On the palate, Almado - Miguel Torres shows itself dense, juicy and structured. This cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo and Touriga Nacional fully reveals its power here. Ripe blackberry, black cherry and blackcurrant coat the palate with generous fruit. Notes of dark chocolate, mocha, smoke, sweet tobacco and a hint of licorice join in. The spice from maturation in large wooden casks rounds off the aromatic profile in a harmonious way.

The tannin structure is powerful yet finely polished. The tannins take up the dark fruit aromas and give the wine backbone and length. The vibrant acidity from the Valle Central provides freshness and balance despite the opulent body. The mouthfeel can be described as a harmonious combination of volume, power and elegant firmness. In the long finish, cassis, espresso, cedarwood and a touch of black olives linger.

The style of the wine is clearly shaped by the grape varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon contributes structure, tannin and the distinctive cassis note. Merlot adds volume, a supple texture and juicy plum. Tempranillo and Touriga Nacional bring spice, dark berries, floral nuances and a fine, slightly exotic aromatic complexity. Together they create a red wine that appears powerful yet well-balanced, with clear fruit and elegant oak spice.

The origin in the Valle de Maule has a tangible influence on the character of the wine. Warm days promote ripeness and richness, cool nights preserve freshness and tension. Soils of alluvial deposits, clay and gravel provide density, reliable water supply and a fine mineral undertone. From this interplay arises a red wine with a distinctive personality that combines ambition and sheer drinking pleasure.

The aromas unfold in a multifaceted way and invite you on a journey of discovery. Typical impressions in the glass include, among others:

  • Dark fruits such as blackberry, blackcurrant and black cherry
  • Roasted notes of coffee, cocoa, toast and vanilla from the large wooden casks
  • Spicy nuances of black pepper, clove and sweet tobacco
  • Delicate floral hints of violet and dried rose
  • Mineral notes of graphite and earth in the background

Almado - Miguel Torres is ideal for those who appreciate characterful red wines with depth. Its strengths become apparent in several areas:

  1. Expressive cuvée of four noble grape varieties with a clear sense of origin
  2. Fine balance of power, structure, freshness and elegance
  3. Multi-layered aromatics with dark fruit, spice and oak notes
  4. Long finish and remarkable ageing potential
  5. Impressive performance both as a food companion and enjoyed on its own

Production of Almado by Miguel Torres

The grapes for this wine come from Chile’s Valle de Maule within the broader Valle Central. The region has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and cooler nights that allow slow ripening. The vines grow on diverse soils of clay, gravel and alluvial deposits that store water and at the same time ensure good drainage. These conditions lead to grapes with concentrated fruit and structure.

The cuvée is based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo and Touriga Nacional. Cabernet Sauvignon provides the framework, pronounced tannins and the characteristic cassis note. Merlot complements this with volume, a velvety mouthfeel and hints of ripe plum. Tempranillo contributes red and dark berries, fine spice and subtle herbal tones. Touriga Nacional adds aromas of violets, dense texture and complex dark fruit. Together they create a wine of depth, harmony and intriguing complexity.

The grapes are harvested selectively so that only fully ripe, aromatically rich fruit is used. The harvest time is chosen so that ripeness of fruit and freshness are in a well-judged balance. After arriving at the winery, the grapes are carefully destemmed and the must is treated gently. A controlled period of maceration promotes color extraction, tannin structure and aromatic intensity without creating harshness.

Fermentation takes place under controlled temperature conditions to preserve the delicate fruit notes while shaping the structure. The must ferments in tanks at moderate temperatures so that red and dark berry aromas can develop clearly and precisely. After fermentation is complete, the young wine rests on the fine lees, which builds volume, mouthfeel and additional complexity.

Maturation in large wooden casks decisively shapes the style. Over about twelve months, the wine ages in 1,000-liter fuders. These casks impart only subtle, elegant oak notes and preserve the expression of origin and fruit. During ageing, a harmonious exchange between wine, wood and oxygen takes place. As a result, the tannins become smoother, the fruit appears well-integrated and fine notes of vanilla, toast, coffee and noble wood emerge.

The producer pursues a clear ambition with this wine. The cuvée showcases the potential of the Valle de Maule in a striking way. Terroir, grape varieties and maturation in large wooden casks come together to form a red wine that unites depth, structure, elegance and ageing capacity. In the glass, it reflects consistent quality-focused work from vineyard to bottle.

Serving recommendations for Almado by Miguel Torres

Almado is excellently suited as a companion to hearty dishes. Its robust structure and dark fruit harmonize particularly well with red meats. A juicy grilled beef steak with rosemary potatoes and a rich jus is an outstanding match for this wine. Braised beef shoulder, herb-crusted leg of lamb or quickly seared sirloin also pair very well.

The wine also shows great potential with game dishes. Venison ragout with lingonberries, saddle of venison with dark sauce or wild boar with mushroom ragout complement its spicy character and roasted notes perfectly. Braised veal cheeks or oxtail with root vegetables form further ideal partners.

Lovers of Mediterranean cuisine will enjoy it with dishes featuring robust tomato sauces and herbs. Pasta with ragù, lasagne, lamb stew with thyme or an aromatic oven roast with vegetables provide ideal stages. Aged hard cheeses such as Manchego, Pecorino or robust mountain cheese also pair convincingly with its dense, spicy profile.

For vegetarian menus, Almado is recommended with roasted vegetables such as eggplant, bell pepper and zucchini, with lentil stew with herbs or with mushroom risotto with porcini. The dark fruit and spicy notes combine impressively here with roasted flavors from the kitchen.

As a companion to special occasions, the wine shows its elegant side. It is suitable for festive dinners, birthday gatherings, relaxed evenings with friends or as a stylish gift for wine lovers. It also offers intense enjoyment and many facets in the glass when sipped on its own in a large red wine glass after a long day.

The ideal serving temperature is between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius. A short time in a decanter enhances aromatics and harmony, especially in younger vintages. A generously shaped red wine glass with a slightly tapering rim brings out the dark fruit, the spice and the oak notes to best effect. Under good conditions, the wine can be stored in the cellar for several years and gains depth, complexity and mature charm over time.
