Peter Mertes Wine Cellar - Wines with Tradition and Dedication

Since its founding in 1924, the Peter Mertes wine cellar has been run as a family business. With more than 400 employees, they are now active in the wine business both nationally and worldwide from their company headquarters in the wine town of Bernkastel-Kues.
Out of love for wine, the winemaker Peter Mertes founded his own winery in 1924 at a time when wine was reserved solely for the upper social class. His goal was to make wine accessible to everyone and to inspire as many people as possible with wine.
Even today, this liberal mindset of the company founder is deeply rooted in the corporate philosophy. One principle of their work is: "First and foremost, wine should taste good and contribute to the joy of life." Their employees, many of whom run their own private wineries, therefore work with ambition and passion to offer customers wines that tastefully accompany the precious moments of life.

Peter Mertes family wineries

The Peter Mertes family wineries currently comprise just under 100 hectares of vineyard area, 80% of which are steep slopes along the Moselle and the Saar. These include top sites of world renown such as: Zeltinger Himmelreich, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Nonnenberg, Graacher Himmelreich, Domprobst, Abtsberg, Bernkasteler Badstube, Johannisbrünnchen, Lay, Bernkastel-Kueser Kardinalsberg, Sommerauer Schlossberg, Trierer Domherrenberg. In addition to the Moselle sites, 4 hectares on the Ruwer and 18 hectares on the Saar are also cultivated.
When Peter Mertes founded the family business, he nurtured a great passion for Moselle wine and from then on was committed to regional wines of exquisite quality. This tradition is continued to this day with the Peter Mertes Gold Edition, under which they offer wines that come exclusively from vineyards along the Moselle that are still family-owned today.
Also worth a visit is Gut Sommerau, their single vineyard in sole ownership. Here you can look forward to wines from the Sommerauer Schlossberg, a spacious terrace directly on the Ruwer-Hochwald cycle path, as well as first-class Italian cuisine in a modern ambiance.
