The fascinating world of Zibibbo: More than just a wine

Anyone who has Zibibbo in the glass can taste the untamed power of the southern sun. This extraordinary white grape variety is a true survivor and loves hot, sun-drenched regions. It’s no surprise that it has found its true home above all in the Mediterranean region, especially in Sicily and on the small volcanic island of Pantelleria.

What is Zibibbo? A definition

Zibibbo [tsiˈbib:o]
Zibibbo is the synonym used mainly in Italy for the ancient grape variety Muscat d’Alexandrie. From a linguistic point of view, the name derives from the Arabic word “Zabib”, which simply means “raisin”. The sugar-rich Zibibbo grapes are perfectly suited as table grapes, for raisin production and of course for making highly aromatic wines with a distinctive muscat note.

Between myths, Cleopatra and real history

Hardly any other grape variety is surrounded by so many myths. A persistent rumor claims, for example, that Zibibbo was the absolute favorite wine of the Egyptian queen Cleopatra. A lovely idea, but unfortunately one that falls more into the category of “historical PR stunt”! The assumption that the name refers to the Egyptian city of Alexandria is also considered unlikely today.

In fact, modern DNA analyses show that this variety is a natural cross between Muscat Blanc and Axina de Tres Bias. Its true roots lie in Greece or Italy, from where it was already documented in the 16th century (among others by the botanist Pietro Andrea Mattioli) in Sicily.

“For me, Zibibbo is not an ordinary wine – it is southern passion turned into liquid. When you close your eyes and breathe in this delicate scent of muscat and roses, you are mentally standing right in the sun-scorched vineyards of Sicily. - René Harnisch, Founder VINELLO”

What does Zibibbo taste like? (Aroma & enjoyment)

The late-ripening grapes produce wines that linger in the memory. When you buy a Zibibbo, you can expect the following profile:

  • Aromatics: An unmistakable scent of Muscat, paired with delicate rose petals, apricots and fine honey.
  • Style: Although there are exciting dry versions, Zibibbo truly shines in the world of sweet wines (such as the famous Moscato di Pantelleria).
  • Food pairing: It is the perfect companion to spicy cheese, fruity desserts or traditional Sicilian almond pastries.
