Barbera: The Piedmontese diva among the grape varieties

A grape variety with character and tradition

Barbera, one of Italy's oldest and most fascinating grape varieties, is known for its rich history and unique character. Originally from Piedmont, it has evolved over the centuries to become one of the most popular and widespread varieties in the country.

Barbera is a fresh, fruity grape variety with a medium body. It is characterized by its low tannin content and deep red, bright color. This Italian grape variety is primarily cultivated in Piedmont, where the focus is on reduced yields and high quality. Barbera d'Asti from the municipality of the same name is a well-known red wine from Italy. In regions such as Piedmont, Barbera red wine is vinified as a single variety. Other wine-growing regions use the grape variety as a component in modern cuvées.

Costigliole-Barbera-Weinregion

Origin, ancestry and history

Barbera - a name that sounds like music to the ears in Piedmont. The indigenous grape variety has its home in the rolling hills of this Italian region. And it has been deeply rooted in Piedmontese wine culture for centuries. Its exact origins are obscure, but the first written mentions from the 13th century bear witness to its long history.

Its name is probably derived from "barba", the Italian word for beard. This refers to the hairy skins of the grapes. Barbera has always been an important grape variety for wine production in northern Italy. It has earned its place as one of the noblest and most characterful varieties.

Barbera - a grape variety with many facets

Barbera is a true diva among grape varieties. The grape is both charming and accessible as well as complex and profound. Its adaptability to different terroirs and cultivation methods enables the production of a diverse range of wines. From fruity, light everyday wines to powerful and elegant Barolo alternatives, everything is possible.

Distribution and growing areas

The grape variety thrives particularly well in temperate climates with warm days and cool nights. The best Barbera wines often come from hillside vineyards that offer optimal sunlight and drainage. Piedmont is considered the heart of the Barbera growing regions. Here it dominates the vineyards by far and shapes the character of the region like no other grape variety. The provinces of Asti, Alba and Alessandria are home to the best sites for Barbera. Here it can thrive on calcareous soils and in cool, hilly locations. Today, Barbera is not only found in Piedmont. Barbera can also be found in other regions of Italy, such as Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna. But Barbera has also gained a foothold in other parts of Italy and overseas, such as California, Australia and South America.

Climate and soil - the ideal conditions for Barbera

Barbera loves a cool and chalky climate. The gentle hills of Piedmont with their calcareous soils and cool climate. These provide it with the perfect conditions to develop its complex aromas and powerful structure. The grape variety benefits from sufficient rainfall and thrives best at altitudes between 200 and 400 meters.

Babera wines - a high-yielding vine

Barbera is a high-yielding vine. This was almost its undoing due to the wine boom that began in Italy in the 1970s. The Barbera vine was used to produce cheap mass-produced wines. Some of these were also adulterated, as was revealed in the methanol scandal in the mid-1980s. Declining quality and low prices damaged the reputation of Barbera wines to such an extent that they were almost unsaleable.

Barbera-Traube

Babera wine - high quality and single varietal

In the meantime, Italy has returned to appropriate quantities and careful handling of Barbera vines. Today, for example, Piedmont - the wine region where Barbera is the most widespread grape variety - is once again producing valuable wines. Like the famous Barbera d'Alba and Barbera D'Asti. High-quality, pure Barbera wines are also produced in Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy. In other Italian wine regions, Barbera is mainly used for table wines and as a blending partner.

Barbera D'Alba - where Barbera still grows pure

Piedmont is blessed with a hilly and picturesque landscape. With the cool soil of the Langhe between the Po and the Alps and world-famous wines. One of these is undoubtedly the Barbera d'Alba, a ruby-red, intensely fragrant and full-bodied red wine. Made almost exclusively from the noble Barbera grape variety, Barbera d'Alba captures the finest aromas of Piedmont. It also has a structure that not only makes it possible to age for many years, but actually recommends it. Treat yourself to a glass of Barbera d'Alba immediately after purchase and one after years of ageing. You will realize that time is a crucial component of the highest quality.

Barbera d'Alba - small town, big reputation

The red wine Barbera d'Alba extracts the full temperament and joie de vivre of the character of Piedmont with every grape. Intense play of colors between ruby red and garnet red. Deep flavor with hints of blackberry, cherry, strawberry and jam. Spicy notes of cinnamon, pepper and vanilla. A Barbera d'Alba will stay in your memory, even when the bottle has already dispensed its last drop. A Barbera d'Alba must have at least 12% vol. to earn DOC status. In the case of Barbera d'Alba Riserva, even 12.5% vol. is prescribed. However, most wines exceed this requirement by far. Barbera d'Alba is a rich wine that makes celebrations festive and friends happy.

DOC Barbera d'Alba

The controlled designation of origin, in Italian Denominazione di origine controllata, expects the winegrowers of Piedmont to fulfill the following regulations.

  • The wine must consist of at least 85% Barbera grapes, the remaining 15% may be supplemented by Nebbiolo.
  • Only the Barbera d'Alba Superiore must be aged for a legal period of 12 months, of which 4 months must be spent in wooden barrels.

Barbera d'Asti - a journey into the province

In the hilly heart of Piedmont, in the middle of the Milan, Turin and Genoa triangle, the town of Asti nestles against the vine-covered hills. The Barbera grape variety in particular lines the vineyards. There is a great demand for the intense and fruity character of the red grape variety. Without it, Barbera d'Asti would be unimaginable. The popular red wine Barbera d'Asti DOCG is mostly vinified here as a single variety, but at least 90% Barbera. This produces a powerful, ruby-red wine that expresses the temperament and passion of Piedmont in every glass.

Single-varietal Barbera d'Asti wine

This Italian red wine from the provinces of Alessandria to Asti knows how to convey its strengths in an appealing way. A deep ruby red color presents itself in the glass, fruity notes of ripe red berries and cherries ensnare the palate. A juicy acidity opens up a fresh taste. Barbera d'Asti may be complex, but it is also accessible and superficial. The wine from the south-eastern hills of Piedmont has enjoyed DOCG status since 2008. Accordingly, the statutory regulations for Barbera d'Asti are irrevocable. And they help Italian winegrowers to produce wines of the highest quality with a great and popular name.

The diversity of Barbera wines

Barbera is a chameleon-like grape variety. Depending on the growing region, vintage and vinification method, it produces wines with different characters. From fruity, light rosé wines to sparkling wines and full-bodied red wines. The range of Barbera wines is almost endless.

Taste and character - an unmistakable profile

Barbera wines impress with their intense color, which can range from deep ruby red to garnet red. The wines are generally fruity with a distinctive acidity. They offer aromas of red fruits, herbs and spices. On the nose, they develop a seductive bouquet of red fruits such as cherry, raspberry and plum. Paired with spicy notes of pepper, cloves and nutmeg. On the palate, they are powerful and elegant with a well-integrated acidity and a long, harmonious finish.

Info box Barbera d'Asti DOCG

  • Consists of at least 90% Barbera grapes, but is predominantly vinified as a single variety.
  • The wine must mature for at least 4 months, for Barbera d'Asti Superiore at least 14 months, 6 months of which must be in wooden barrels.
  • The alcohol content must be at least 12% vol. and at least 12.5% vol. for Superiore.

Ageing and storage

Barbera wines can be aged in different ways depending on the style and desired character. Wines drunk young mature in stainless steel tanks, while Barolo alternatives are aged in French oak barriques. This gives them additional complexity and maturity.

When vinifying Barbera wines, winemakers often rely on a combination of traditional and modern techniques. This allows them to exploit the full potential of the grapes. The ageing period in wooden barrels, both Slavonian oak and French oak, gives the wines additional complexity and depth.

Barbera-Weinfaesser

Special facts

  • Barbera is the second most widely cultivated grape variety in Italy after Sangiovese
  • The grape variety is also known as Barbera d'Asti, Barbera del Monferrato and Barbera d'Alba
  • The famous Barolo blend Barbera d'Alba Superiore DOCG is also produced from Barbera grapes
  • Barbera wines can usually be drunk young. Some Barolo alternatives can be stored for up to 10 years or longer.
  • The Barbera vine is very resistant to disease, which makes it attractive to winegrowers.
  • In addition to Italy, Barbera is also cultivated in other countries such as Argentina and California.
  • Some of the best Barbera wines are produced in the DOCG zones of Piedmont. For example, Barbera d'Asti and Barbera del Monferrato.

Recommended drinking

Barbera wines are an excellent accompaniment to a wide range of dishes. Thanks to their lively acidity, they harmonize particularly well with hearty dishes. But they are also a pure delight when drunk on their own.

The fruity and light-footed varieties go perfectly with antipasti, salads and pasta. Stronger Barbera wines harmonize perfectly with grilled meat, game and hearty braised dishes or mature cheese.
