More information about Ghost Corner The Bowline - Cederberg

The Ghost Corner The Bowline from Cederberg is a vinous masterpiece from South Africa and an absolute VINELLO insider tip. In the glass, it shines a bright straw yellow with greenish reflections. Already at the first swirl, an intense bouquet unfolds of fresh quince, ripe pear, and nuances of black currant leaf. Fine hints of gooseberry, citrus fruits, and grapefruit blend with delicate notes of coastal herbs and fynbos. On the palate, the wine is creamy, textured, and multilayered. The Semillon portion brings density, smoothness, and hints of nashi pear and quince compote, while the Sauvignon Blanc provides freshness, clarity, and mineral tension. In the long finish, aromas of honeydew melon, citrus blossoms, almonds, and fine herbs can be found. Even young, this wine impresses with brilliant aromatics and precision but gains depth and elegance with several years of aging. Its potential extends beyond eight years, making it a white wine that delights with finesse, harmony, and style.

Vinification of the Ghost Corner The Bowline from Cederberg

The vineyards for the Ghost Corner The Bowline from Cederberg are located around Elim at Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa. The region is known for its rugged coasts, strong Atlantic winds, and mineral-rich soils composed of Bokkeveld shale, koffieklip, and gravel. These conditions create a cool climate ideal for Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The vines are over 17 years old and deeply rooted, granting them aromatic concentration and terroir character. The yield is about eight tons per hectare, further enhancing quality. Harvesting is done exclusively by hand in the early morning hours between February 9 and March 4 to ensure freshness and aromatics.

In the winery, processing takes place under reductive conditions using dry ice and carbon dioxide to avoid oxygen exposure and preserve the clear fruit aromas. After a short maceration period of two to four hours at low temperature, the grapes are gently pressed. The Sauvignon Blanc ferments in stainless steel tanks to emphasize freshness and precision, while the Semillon ferments in 400-liter French oak barrels of the fourth fill. This maturation imparts fine spice and delicate wood notes to the wine. Both grape varieties then age for five months on the fine lees. Through regular stirring (bâtonnage), a creamy, dense structure and additional complexity are created. Only after this maturation phase are the parcels blended into a cuvée: 61 percent Sauvignon Blanc and 39 percent Semillon. With 13 percent alcohol, an acidity of 6.12 g/l, and 2.4 g/l residual sugar, the wine demonstrates perfect balance between freshness, structure, and elegance. Its aging potential ranges from four to eight years, making it a white wine with long development potential.
