The sparkling white wines Riesling and Grüner Veltliner are the basis for the designation Kamptal DAC. Districtus Austriae Controllatus (DAC) refers to the origin from the wine-growing area. Additionally, only the fruity Grüner Veltliner and the fragrant Riesling from Kamptal may bear the abbreviation. It designates on one hand the area and on the other hand stands for quality wine. The two white grape varieties are primarily responsible for the excellent reputation of the wine-growing region. Of course, other white wine varieties are also carefully cultivated in Kamptal. Burgundy and Pinot Blanc grow on the vineyards as well as Muskateller and Chardonnay.

Riesling 

The Riesling from Kamptal ripens late. When harvested young, it is primarily light and acidic. However, when the small, densely growing grapes with the black scars on the berry are harvested late, the Riesling becomes an unparalleled white wine. The late-appearing noble rot also enhances the quality of the Riesling. Its bouquet is particularly special. It smells, among other things, of fresh citrus fruits, apple, and apricot. Floral and elegant, it remains long on the nose. No wonder, then, that the Riesling, with these outstanding criteria, has a demanding, critical berry. However, on the Kamptal terraces and vineyards, it finds the terroir it needs to develop its strengths.

Grüner Veltliner

Grüner Veltliner is a very important grape variety for Austria. It is grown here in large quantities. Almost a third of the total area for grapevines in Austria is planted with this fruity white wine variety. The vines usually produce large, occasionally very large berries. Grüner Veltliner is extremely high-yielding and therefore requires precise monitoring. Because with larger, well-developed grapes, the quality of taste declines. The yellowish wine tastes refreshing between 5 and 7°C. The grape variety is considered one of the indigenous varieties in Austria.

Red Wine Zweigelt from Kamptal

Zweigelt is the most widely grown red grape variety in Austria. Well-known synonyms for the grape with medium ripening time are Blauer Zweigelt and Rotburger. Zweigelt is a new breed developed by Professor Friedrich Zweigelt. The medium-sized grape with round, blue-black berries was bred in 1922. Its lineage traces back to the grape varieties St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch. The Zweigelt from Kamptal refreshes with a fruity bouquet. Aromas of raspberry, blackberry, and blueberry can be found. Often, a strong cherry scent lingers in the nose, interplayed with very fine pomegranate aromas and orange. In terms of color, Zweigelt from Kamptal is typically found in cherry red. More often, however, the red wine displays a ruby red coloration in the glass, interspersed with violet highlights. The lively acidity of the sometimes varietal Zweigelt has good length on the palate. It also works well as a cuvée.
