Great variety and excellent taste from Lower Austria

With just over 28,000 hectares of cultivation area, Lower Austria is the largest wine-growing region in the country, known far beyond its borders for its quality wines. The region offers a rich spectrum of different wine styles and origins, featuring both local rarities and internationally recognized grape varieties. For wine lovers and those who wish to become one, there are wonderful drops to discover here, whether directly on-site or by ordering from VINELLO.

Subdivision of the wine-growing region Lower Austria

Lower Austria is divided into eight specific regions as a wine-growing area:

  1. Wachau: Partly a DAC region, listed as a cultural landscape in the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. Here, spectacularly sighted terraced vineyards yield top-class Riesling wines.
  1. Kremstal: A fully DAC region where only DAC wines can indicate the origin "Kremstal." Kremstal is internationally known and appreciated for its Grüner Veltliner and Riesling.
  1. Kamptal: A fully DAC region where only DAC wines can indicate the origin "Kamptal." The main grape varieties for white wines are Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, while Zweigelt and Pinot Noir are predominant for red wines.
  1. Traisental: A fully DAC region where only DAC wines can indicate the origin "Traisental." The leading wines here are mineral and robust Riesling as well as spicy and typically fruity Grüner Veltliner.
  1. Wagram: Previously known as "Donauland," numerous biologically produced wines grow on some very steep slopes here. A specialty is the indigenous grape variety Rote Veltliner.
  1. Weinviertel: A fully DAC region where only DAC wines can indicate the origin "Weinviertel." Here, Grüner Veltliner predominates among the white wines, but elegant Pinot Blancs and Chardonnays, as well as various red wines, are also produced.
  1. Thermenregion: This region produces numerous different wines. Particularly typical for the Thermenregion are the indigenous varieties Rotgipfler and Zierfandler, which are produced here in significant quantities.
  2. Carnuntum: Partly a DAC region founded on the eponymous Roman settlement. Carnuntum is characterized primarily by its powerful and elegant red wines, which are mainly made from Blauem Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, but also from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Geography, soils, and climate

There are three major climatic regions in Lower Austria: in the north the Weinviertel, west of the capital Vienna the Danube region with its numerous side valleys, and in the southeast the Pannonian Lower Austria. Overall, a temperate climate prevails, although it can vary in detail from area to area.

About half of the soils consist of fine-grained loess and limestone, along with areas of marl and sandstone, gravel, sand, and clayey silt in different mixing ratios. To a lesser extent, these soils lie above solid, crystalline rocks such as granite, gneiss, or granulite.

Classification in Lower Austria

Many wines from Lower Austria are allowed to bear the quality seal DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus), introduced in 2003. They are each regarded as particularly typical for a region. The requirements for the approved grape varieties and vinification methods are set by regional committees. Quality and predicate wines exceed all other classifications in Lower Austria in terms of quantity.
