Marisco Vineyards, named after the ancestors of founder Brent Marris, who originally bore the surname De Marisco.

Vineyard Marisco

About the history of the winery

Brent Marris grew up in the Marlborough vineyards planted by his father. As a young winemaker, he was partly responsible for the creation of two of New Zealand's best-known wine brands - Oyster Bay and Wither Hills.

Winemaker Brent Marris

Using the knowledge he had gained in the area as a youth, and what he later learned as a winemaker, Brent found an exceptional 268-hectare vineyard on the banks of the Waihopai River. Here he planted the varieties that have made Marlborough famous around the world:

  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Pinot Gris
  • Pinot Noir

 Wine line The Ned

Their vineyards now produce world-renowned brands like The Ned and The Kings Series, as well as finely defined niche brands like The Craft Series.

The The Ned brand was launched in 2006. Named after one of the highest peaks in the southeast of the vineyard. He had climbed that as a child, so today The Ned is a very important project and a matter of the heart for Brent.

Things to know about Marisco Vineyards
What is behind the unusual name of the wine series “The King’s Series”?
The series is a tribute to the scandalous family history of founder Brent Marris. His ancestors, the de Mariscos, lived in the 12th and 13th centuries on Lundy Island off the English coast. They had a turbulent relationship with the English crown – at times in the king’s favor, at other times outlawed for piracy and high treason. Wines such as “The King’s Bastard” or “The King’s Wrath” tell one of these historical anecdotes respectively.
Who is the driving force behind Marisco Vineyards and what influence did he have on New Zealand winegrowing?
The founder and winemaker is Brent Marris, a key figure in the Marlborough region. He was the first “local” to complete a degree in oenology and played a major role in developing world‑famous brands such as Oyster Bay and Wither Hills. With Marisco Vineyards, he realized his dream of having his own family winery in 2003, in order to create a legacy for future generations.
Where does the name of the estate’s probably best-known wine brand, “The Ned”, come from?
“The Ned” is named after one of the highest and most distinctive mountain peaks in the Wither Hills range in the southeast of the vineyard. For Brent Marris, this mountain was an adventure playground during his childhood and youth. Today, the name stands for wines that are intended to reflect the freshness and vibrancy of the Marlborough region – in keeping with the winery’s motto: “Young at Heart.”
What makes the terroir of the winery in the Waihopai Valley so special?
The vineyards lie on the banks of the Waihopai River on terraces that were formed over thousands of years by glacial movements. The soil consists of ancient river gravels that store warmth during the day and provide good drainage at night. Furthermore, the Waihopai Valley is often a few degrees warmer during the day and cooler at night than other parts of Marlborough, which particularly promotes the development of intense aromas and the characteristic acidity.
