Wine from Saxony - characterful & elegant

The northernmost and geographically manageable wine-growing region is bursting with rarities. Or have you ever served a wine from Saxony? Then come along on a tasteful journey along the Saxon Wine Route and experience castles, rustic wine taverns, and the often white wines between Dresden and the porcelain city of Meissen.

Saxony Wine at a glance

  • Vineyard area: approximately 500 ha
  • Sites: 4 individual sites and 17 individual sites
  • Climate: continental, mild, low precipitation
  • Top grape varieties: Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Pinot Blanc
  • Ratio white/red: 80/20

A small wine-growing region in the deep east

The metropolitan area of Dresden is a cherished wine-growing region. Especially in the greater Meissen and Radebeul area, grapes thrive on sun-drenched slopes and in the mild climate along the Elbe. The area is not only the easternmost but also among the smallest wine-growing regions in Germany. Nevertheless, you should not underestimate Saxony as a home of exquisite wines, but rather recognize the uniqueness of the region and try the various grape varieties.

Primarily, winemakers focus on white varieties, as they thrive particularly well in the Saxon area and have the best conditions for a rich harvest. On a total of 462 hectares of vineyard land, grapes for Gold Riesling and Pinot Blanc, for Traminer and Müller-Thurgau grow. Riesling or Scheurebe, as well as Elbling and Pinot Gris, are also among the wine varieties of Saxony. Notable sparkling wines and a few red wines also belong to the portfolio of Saxon viticulture and can certainly compete with foreign wines. Red Pinot Noir with a full-bodied aroma, Regent, Frühburgunder or Blue Portuguese as well as Dunkelfelder are red wines produced in Saxony from domestic grapes.

Saxon Wines - Regionality and a Piece of Home

The Elbe and the Elster flow alongside the Saxon vineyards, which can be found in Pillnitz near Dresden, as well as in Meissen and Radebeul. This royal vineyard is one of the most well-known wine-growing areas in Saxony, even though you absolutely will not find the largest and most productive growing place in Pillnitz. Near Görlitz in the valley of the Lusatian Neisse, a non-area wine-growing region is located and counts as the easternmost cultivation area in Germany. The climatic conditions especially pamper the grapes in the Elbe valley, making these wines of exquisite quality. Numerous hours of sunshine and little precipitation, the optimal soil conditions, and the continental climate contribute to the ripening of the grapes and thus to the foundation for quality wines from Saxony.

Saxony Wine in Recent History

With the political turning point came uniform wine laws, with which new wineries and wine estates were founded or revived. Thus, many private wineries were established and the quality of the wine continued to rise. In 1992, the Saxon Wine Route was also explored at the initiative of some wine lovers. It stretches from Diesbar-Seußlitz over Meissen, Radebeul, and Dresden to Pirna. In the new millennium, the umbrella brand “A Rarity. Wines from Saxony.” was created by Saxon winemakers. In 2011, the wine industry in Saxony celebrated its 850th anniversary. The Saxon Wine Route celebrated its 20th anniversary a year later.

Fresh Blood in the East

The rise of wine from Saxony in recent decades is thanks to winemakers, along with investments and high-quality standards, who create wonderful wines with new ideas and dedication, making waves even outside the wine region. For example, wines from Stefan Bönsch are still considered a hidden gem - but they have long been conquering the wine cellars of curious and cosmopolitan wine fans. Whether velvety red wines, harmonious white wine cuvées, or even a Blanc de Noir - a white-verified Pinot Noir - the wines from the sites around Meissen and Radebeul by Stefan Bönsch cater to all tastes with excellence.

Now, you may want to ask; red wine? That far north? Let it be said: the climate plays along. Even attempts with the Syrah grape variety have been exceptionally successful by Bönsch. However, the grape has not yet been approved in Saxony. As temperatures gradually rise due to climate change, red wine from Saxony could certainly benefit from this. The current examples already taste delightful.

Saxony's Castles - Notable Wineries

The wine landscape of the Saxony region is characterized by vineyard churches, rustic wine taverns, wine festivals, and magnificent castles that rise above the Elbe valley. The most famous wineries among them are Schloss Proschwitz near Meissen and Schloss Wackerbarth in Radebeul. The latter is considered the first experiential winery in Europe, where one can experience the craft of winemaking closely, from a hike in the vineyard to tasting.

Schloss Proschwitz, on the other hand, is the largest private winery in Saxony and was first documented as early as 1061.

No less impressive are the vineyard areas around Schloss Pillnitz near Dresden - of course, the castle is also worth seeing.

All wineries have one thing in common: the sublime location of sun-kissed vineyards in the mild climate of the Elbe valley. Ideal conditions for elegant wines with an expressive bouquet and flavor. A visit to the baroque castles is always worthwhile, especially during the grape harvest in autumn. For here, the heart rejoices at wine festivals with fresh and fine wine from Saxon wineries.

Warmer Winters and Later Spring Beginnings

In contrast to the Mosel region, spring takes a little longer to arrive in Saxony. However, this factor is no restriction for winemakers, as autumn is much longer and drier. During the winter months, temperatures rarely drop below freezing, allowing the first shoots of the vines to sprout in spring without frost damage and find optimal growth conditions.

The individual character of Saxon wines is based on the various soil types, as the Elbe valley exhibits a variety of geological formations. Sandstone and loess layers, as well as weathered soils, are covered by river sand, clay, or loess, proving to be highly nutrient-rich. Especially for white wines, the soil composition combined with the climatic conditions is optimal, making the wine of excellent quality that you will enjoy.

Hardly any wine connoisseur suspects that rich yields can be achieved and high-quality wines can be produced deep in the east. The winemakers of Saxony can certainly hold their own among the big players despite their smaller area compared to other German wine regions and look proudly at the diversity of Saxon wines. Driving through the eastern Saxon area, your path is lined with several vineyards and picturesque wineries along the banks of the Elbe.
