Wine from Baden (435)

When Baden wine is served in the wine tavern and the joy of life goes hand in hand with enjoyment, the Badner song is often sung. “The most beautiful land in Germany's regions is my Badner land.” This certainly holds true for the Pinot grape varieties. However, the southernmost and third-largest wine region in Germany is also home to an endless abundance of wine from numerous grapes.

Sun-Kissed and Full-Bodied - Baden Wine

The vast variety of soils, the sunny climate, and state-of-the-art cellar technology are partly responsible for the finest wines from Baden, which, however, rarely make it across the borders. The people of Baden are certainly connoisseurs, and a crisp and full-bodied Baden wine is a must with meals.

It’s all the better that our contacts from Lake Constance to the Taubertal have sent us fine wines from Baden that we are proud to offer you.

Baden Wine

Baden wine is primarily one thing: uncomplicated. This does not mean that the wine is of inferior quality - quite the contrary. However, instead of vinifying wines rich in finesse and complexity, Baden’s quality wine demonstrates its strengths directly. Long live simplicity!

Burgundy in Baden

Baden and Burgundy - a perfect match. With their full-bodied Pinot Noir red wines, over 100 winemaking cooperatives produce exceptional products that are unrivaled throughout Germany. Also, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc vines line the warm slopes between the Black Forest and the Rhine plain. Baden wine is almost exclusively vinified dry. Besides the Burgundy varieties, Müller-Thurgau has also found ideal conditions in Baden and occupies a large part of the vineyard area.

The Specialties from the South

The Markgräflerland on the Swiss border is known for its low-acid Gutedel white wine, which is well received on all occasions.

Particularly the growing regions of Tuniberg and Kaiserstuhl delight the taste buds of numerous wine fans with the Ruländer. The white wine, better known to most as Pinot Gris, benefits from the volcanic rock and loess soil, imparting an unparalleled freshness and minerality. Thanks to the concentrated warmth in the region, the fruit appears particularly robust in its straw-yellow body. Other Baden wine specialties include Rotling, a rosé made from red and white grapes, and Weißherbst, a varietal and white-pressed rosé from a single vineyard. Both are tasty companions for sunny days, of which there are truly enough in Baden.

Other popular grape varieties from the Baden wine region:

  • Riesling
  • Gewürztraminer
  • Muscat
  • Kerner
  • Auxerrois
  • Dornfelder
  • Lemberger
  • Regent
  • Scheurebe
  • Sauvignon blanc

The Wine Regions of Baden

The Baden wine region is divided into 9 wine regions. From north to south, they are:

Tauberfranken - Wine from the Bocksbeutel

Tauberfranken, formerly known as Badisches Frankenland, is considered the northernmost growing region of Baden. Compared to the other 8 Baden regions, the wine region is somewhat cooler, but still warmer than other wine regions in Germany. Mainly Müller-Thurgau vines bask on the southern slopes of the Tauber, ripening into an elegant white wine.

Badische Bergstraße - a Mediterranean Excursion

West of the Taubertal, the Badische Bergstraße winds from Heppenheim to Wiesloch, south of Heidelberg. Here, one can already feel the almost Mediterranean climate that helps the Pinot Noir and Riesling vines attain perfect ripeness with countless hours of sunshine. The wines also acquire a multifaceted minerality that is nourished by the diverse loess soils.

Kraichgau Wine - the Bouquet of Cheerfulness

Immediately after Wiesloch, the wine region Kraichgau begins, stretching all the way to the Black Forest. Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Auxerrois thrive on sandstone, shell limestone, and loess soils, revealing a creamy, fruity, and mineral enjoyment - whether as quality wine or simple country wine for a refreshing wine spritzer.

Ortenau & Durbach Wine

Further south, the wine hills of the Ortenau region shape the lush green landscape. Naturally, the omnipresent Pinot Noir can also be found here. The remaining areas are covered by Müller-Thurgau and Riesling. Ortenau is considered the southernmost growing area for the noble Riesling vine. Due to the great variety of soil, the wines exhibit remarkable minerality and liveliness.

Durbach is also located in the Ortenau wine region. This small community is regarded by many as the quintessential Baden wine village. Thanks in no small part to the varietal Riesling wines, which impress with juicy aromas and a mineral nose.

Breisgau - Dark Forest and Bright Drops

Even in the deepest regions of the Black Forest, grapevines emerge from the nutrient-rich soil. High on the slopes, clearings open up where Pinot Gris, Müller-Thurgau, and Pinot Noir are cultivated. From Oberschopfheim to Freiburg, Breisgau stretches along the slopes of the Black Forest, characterized by a mild climate and expansive loess soils infused with shell limestone and sandstone. This makes Breisgau wine very robust and aromatic - a true Black Forest gem.

Kaiserstuhl Wine & the Franz Keller Winery

Wine and Baden achieve a wonderful harmony at the Kaiserstuhl. Particularly, the Franz Keller Winery knows how to best handle the geographical conditions, vinifying top-quality white and red wines from Baden, ranging from Müller-Thurgau and Gewürztraminer to the Burgundy varieties. It is also remarkable that atypical grape varieties, such as Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon, thrive splendidly on the southern slopes of the Kaiserstuhl. The numerous hours of sunshine and fertile volcanic soils make it possible. It is therefore not particularly surprising that almost a third of all Baden wines are produced at the Kaiserstuhl.

Tuniberg - Wine for and from the Terrace

Excellent red, white, and rosé wines are more the norm than the exception at Tuniberg. The elevation south of the Kaiserstuhl is characterized by terraces that almost encircle the entire mountain, allowing all vines to enjoy the picturesque view, the limestone, and the proximity to nature. Foremost, it is the Pinot Noir, flanked by smaller vineyard areas with Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Blanc as well as a few spots of Chardonnay, Muscat, and Sauvignon blanc.

Markgräflerland Wine - Must be a Gutedel

Earthy and modest, but always honest towards grape and nature - the Markgräflerland stands for craftsmanship, ideal conditions, and Gutedel. The growing region located in the south of Baden is sprinkled with picturesque wine villages and fruitful hillsides claimed by wine, fruit, and forests. Here, alongside white, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay, the Gutedel, known beyond the borders, also thrives - a light yellow, fruity, and floral delight that fits any time of day, whether as a quarter or a spritzer.

Lake Constance Wine - Tastes Like the Fisherwoman

The lake is not only beautiful, but it also provides the vines on the shores with an extra dose of sunshine. The large body of water stores heat during the day and releases it at night. This means nearly equal temperatures - day and night - making the natural conditions at Lake Constance truly special. Lake Constance wine tastes just as exceptional - particularly spicy, mineral, and delicate. With Pinot Gris, Müller-Thurgau, and Pinot Blanc, lake wine already offers a high degree of enjoyment. However, the Pinot Noir holds a special place from Constance to Immenstaad - it was first planted here in Germany in 884 by Charles III.
