Riesling: The King of the Nahe Wine Region

In the Nahe Wine Region, over 80 grape varieties are cultivated. The largest share goes to Riesling, which constitutes all Nahe wines classified as "Großes Gewächs" (Great Growth). Three quarters of the vineyard area is allocated to white wines. One quarter is planted with red grape varieties.

Location and Structure of the Nahe Wine Region

The Nahe wine-growing area is located in Rhineland-Palatinate and stretches along the river of the same name up to Krin as well as in the valleys of its tributaries Glan and Alsenz. Some properties can also be found at Guldenbach and Gräfenbach. In the north, the wine region is bordered by the Taunus, in the northwest by the Hunsrück, and in the southeast by the Nordpfälzer Bergland. The Nahe wine region is divided into the following seven major sites with more than 100 individual sites:

  • Burgweg
  • Kronenberg
  • Paradiesgarten
  • Pfarrgarten
  • Rosengarten
  • Sonnenborn
  • Schlosskapelle

Nahe Wine Region in Brief

The Nahe wine-growing region in Rhineland-Palatinate encompasses over 4,000 hectares of vineyard with 75 percent white and 25 percent red varieties. Riesling is the undisputed king of the region, which is spread across seven major sites along the Nahe and its tributaries Glan and Alsenz. The most diverse soil of all German wine regions, along with a well-protected geographic location, creates ideal growing conditions for mineral-rich, elegant top-quality wines.

Climate and Soil in the Nahe Wine Region

The vineyards along the Nahe and its tributaries benefit from a favorable geographic location that shields them from cold air currents due to the surrounding low mountain ranges to the north and northwest. This protected location provides an almost Mediterranean climate, characterized by relatively little rain, warm summers, and mild winters. Many classic wine varieties thrive here, foremost among them Riesling, which leads the list of cultivated grape varieties.

The extraordinary taste diversity of Nahe wines is partly due to the manifold soil structure. It is unique in Germany and finds hardly any equal in other European countries. Thanks to a dynamic geological history, quartz and slate, sandstone, volcanic rock, Rotliegend, loess, clay, as well as porphyry and melaphyr alternate in the substrate. In total, over 180 different soil types are available to Nahe wine, from which it draws its diverse quality.

History of the Nahe Wine Region

The Nahe wine region boasts a proud tradition of viticulture spanning 2,000 years. As in many other German wine regions, it was the Romans who introduced the cultivation of noble vines here. By the late 19th century, Nahe wine was already regarded as an international top product.

The term "Nahe wine" is however a more recent development. The area between the Moselle and the Rhine received the status of its own wine-growing region for the first time in 1935. It wasn't until 1971 that the wine-growing area was legally defined in its current extent and Nahe wines were commonly referred to as such.

Nahe Wines at VINELLO

For lovers of high-quality dry white wines, we recommend Riesling from the Nahe in the highest classification level "Großes Gewächs," which you can recognize by the "GG" on the front label. This includes, for example, the Bockenauer Felseneck from the Schäfer-Fröhlich winery, the Norheimer Dellchen, as well as the Felsenberg from Dönnhoff or the Monzinger Frühlingsplätzchen from the Schönleber winery.

If you are looking for a white summer and balcony wine, for example, the Grauburgunder or Weißburgunder from the Korrell Johanneshof winery is a good choice. The same producer also offers delicious meals, available as white or red cuvée as well as rosé wine at VINELLO.

If you're envisioning a fresh, semi-dry white wine, we recommend, for example, the Porphyr Riesling feinherb from the Hexamer winery. For sweet white wine enjoyment, we can recommend the Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese and the Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese from Dönnhoff.
