The style runs through more than a century and is always a pleasure to drink. Aromas of black currant, blackberry, balsamic notes, black tea, sweet wax, resin and tobacco is complemented by a present acidity and a pithy mineraility. It will certainly peak in 10 years, but is already great fun!

More information about Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial DOCa - Marques de Murrieta

The Castillo Ygay Grand Reserva Especial of Marqués de Murrieta is considered one of the greatest wines of Spain and is a symbol of the excellence and goodness of Rioja Grande Reservas. This red wine is the result of more than 30 years of experience, making it a true legend.

The cuvée appears in a magnificent brilliant dark ruby red with purple reflections in the glass. On the nose unfolds an aromatic intensity that seduces with red fruits, dark berries, floral notes, spicy nuances and truffles and incense. The palate is caressed by a silky texture and is complex and wonderfully balanced. Tobacco is found alongside the previously mentioned berry notes and warm, balsamic impressions. The tannin is incisive and sweet. The acidity is present and perfectly integrated. This Spanish red wine forms a harmony in itself with an amazing fullness and length.

Vinification of the Castillo Ygay Grand Reserva Especial

The grapes for this red wine cuvée come from 80-year-old vines of the La Plana vineyard of Castillo Ygay in the south of Rioja Alta. At the highest point of the 300 hectares of vineyard owned by the winery. The cuvée is 86% Tempranillo and 14% Mazuelo.

The Tempranillo grapes as well as the Mazuelo grapes are harvested by hand. After harvesting, the grapes are carefully destemmed and pressed. This is followed by temperature-controlled maceration and fermentation for 11 days. During this process, the maceration cake is subjected to daily punching down to aid extraction.

This wine is then aged for 26 months in 225 liter French and American oak barrels. After another 36 months of bottle aging, this red wine leaves the Marqués de Murrieta winery.
