Pinotage - Red Wine in Afrikaans

The Cape of Good Red Wine Taste

The body of Pinotage red wine shines in a deep and impenetrable red, revealing reflexes of a fruity and rounded structure. In the intense bouquet, red and dark forest fruits, plums, banana, cherry, and pomegranate harmonize. If Pinotage is aged in a barrique cask, aromas of chocolate, vanilla, coffee, mocha, and spices join the soft and velvety structure. The high sugar content of the grape variety results in a high alcohol content of about 14% vol. Pinotage is completely balanced with noticeably strong tannins, a full body, and aromatic fragrance. The dark red Pinotage is usually vinified as a single varietal, although Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon are considered good blending partners.

Pinotage Wine - From Stellenbosch to the World

Pinotage is an indigenous grape variety from the Republic of South Africa; nowhere else does the grape grow and thrive so abundantly. No wonder - for the rather complicated conditions of the wine-growing nation, Pinotage is perfectly suited. And it was created for this. In 1924 by Professor Abraham Isak Perold at Stellenbosch University. From a cross between the sweet and fruity Pinot Noir grape, also known as Spätburgunder, and the resistant and fruity Cinsault variety, an European grape emerged with all the characteristics for successful cultivation in the hot and dry climate of South Africa. The name Pinotage is derived from Pinot and Hermitage, the South African name for the Cinsault grape. Perfectly adapted to the terroir, the red and rosé wines from the Pinotage grape are very fruitful and easy to cultivate. So simple that quantity reduction is necessary to achieve high-quality standards. Attempts to cultivate the grape variety in other countries have rarely been successful. Aside from small stocks in New Zealand, Brazil, and California, numerous attempts worldwide have failed. Pinotage is South Africa, and South Africa is Pinotage.

Things to know about Pinotage
Was ist Pinotage?
