More information about Papale Primitivo di Manduria DOP - Varvaglione
The Papale Primitivo di Manduria from Varvaglione is one of the winery’s flagship wines. This exceptional red wine enters the glass with a bright purple color and cherry-red reflections. The nose is dominated by the most intense notes of ripe berries, especially blackberry, blueberry, and redcurrant. Spicy notes of brown rock candy, oak, cocoa, and licorice round off the bouquet of the Papale Primitivo di Manduria from Varvaglione.
On the palate, the Papale – Italian for papal – starts wonderfully rounded, full-bodied, and silky. Its subtle natural sweetness combines excellently with soft tannins and a harmoniously interwoven fruit sweetness.
Vinification of the Papale Primitivo di Manduria from Varvaglione
For this top Primitivo from Manduria, only grapes from particularly old vines are used. After the harvest, they are destemmed and crushed. After a certain maceration time, the Papale Primitivo di Manduria is transferred to fermentation tanks at 26–28°C. After fermentation and malolactic conversion are complete, the Varvaglione Papale is filled into tonneaux made of French oak, where it can refine for 8 months.
The Papale wine series was created on the occasion of Varvaglione’s 90th anniversary, which was celebrated in 2012. The “papal” wine received its name, incidentally, from the vineyard on which the grapes for Papale Primitivo grow, as it once belonged to the family of Pope Benedict XIII.
