The Papale Primitivo di Manduria of Varvaglione is one of the figureheads of the winery. This exceptional red wine comes into the glass with bright purple and cherry-red reflections. The nose is determined by the most intense notes of ripe berries, especially blackberries, blueberries and red currants. Spicy notes of brown candy, oak, cocoa and liquorice round off the bouquet of the Papale Primitivo di Manduria by Varvaglione
On the palate, the papal - Italian for peachy - starts wonderfully round, full-bodied and silky. Its subtle fruit sweetness combines excellently with soft tannins and a harmoniously woven fruit sweetness.
Vinification of the Papale Primitivo di Manduria of Varvaglione
Only grapes of particularly old vines are used for this top primitivo from Manduria. After harvesting, they are destemmed and mashed. After a certain mashing time, the Papale Primitivo di Manduria migrates into the fermentation tanks at 26-28°C. After fermentation and biological acid conversion, the Varvaglione Papale is filled into French oak barrels, where it can then refine for 8 months.
The Papale wine series was launched on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Varvaglione, which was celebrated in 2012. The „papal“ wine got its name from the vineyard where the grapes for the Papale Primitivo grow, because it once belonged to the family of Pope Benedict XIII
Food recommendation for the Varvaglione Papale Primitivo di Manduria
Enjoy this first-class primitivo of old vines with spicy meat dishes such as lamb ragout with cinnamon and quinces, grilled entrecôte with braised pepper or simply with exquisite finely tart chocolate.
