Campania Wine and Its History

The first winemakers in one of the oldest wine regions in Italy were the Etruscans, followed by the Greeks, who established colonies here around 1000 BC. Later came the Romans, who perfected viticulture and supposedly produced the finest wines of antiquity in Campania, including the famous varieties Falerno, Faustiniano, and Greco. They were called "Wines of the Emperors," and to this day, one can see the cult surrounding wine in the preserved frescoes in the villas of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Campania in Brief

In the diverse world of Italian wine, Campania wine is among the oldest cultivars. In ancient times, Campania was considered the best wine-growing region, where the "Wines of the Emperors" were produced. Today, many simple wines are produced there. However, the top wines Agliano del Taburno and Taurasi - both DOCG wines - are now being compared by connoisseurs to the outstanding red wines of Tuscany and Piedmont.

Viticulture in Campania Today

The area planted with vines covers about 42,000 hectares, which on average yields approximately 2.2 million hectoliters of wine annually. Red wines account for about 70% of the total production, while 30% is white wine. The leading red variety is Aglianico, from which winemakers produce full-bodied, dark, and aromatic wines like Taurasi, one of the most famous great wines in Campania. The most appreciated white wines are made from Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo, characterized by fine aromas of nuts and yellow fruits.

Climate and Soils in Campania

Wine from Campania is shaped by the Mediterranean maritime climate, with plenty of warmth on the sun-drenched slopes and protective mountain ranges. The soils are mainly composed - no surprise given the proximity to Vesuvius - of volcanic rock and alluvial soil. In the higher elevations, cold winters alternate with hot, dry summers, making them particularly suitable for red wines. Unfortunately, the potential is not fully utilized, as the region is very poor and still suffers from the destruction caused by earthquakes in the 1960s. However, new and higher quality requirements are gradually ensuring that Campania wine is gaining more significance again.
