DOC and DOCG in Veneto

With 14 DOCG and 28 DOC wine regions, Veneto, as the region is called in Italian, offers a high density of quality. Shielded from harsher weather influences by the Alps to the north, Veneto boasts maritime climatic conditions as well as sun-drenched elevations and fertile plains. The diversity of the landscape makes Veneto perhaps the most varied wine-growing region in Italy.

Location and Structure of Veneto

Veneto is located in the northeastern part of Italy. To the southeast, the region borders the northern Adriatic Sea, home to the famous tourist hotspot Venice. To the northeast, the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia follows. After a short border between Veneto and Austria, the Trentino-Alto Adige region lies to the northwest, Lombardy to the west, and Emilia-Romagna to the south.

Politically, Veneto is divided into the seven provinces of Belluno, Padua, Rovigo, Treviso, Venice, Verona, and Vicenza. The important geographical division for viticulture includes the Dolomites, which belong to the Alps, and the Venetian pre-Alps in the north, the wide Po Valley, an extensive hilly landscape, the Adriatic coast in the east, and the area around Lake Garda in the west.

Wines from Veneto

The geographical diversity of Veneto ensures a high density of DOC and DOCG regions with their own distinct character, often located in close proximity to one another. In the rocky sandy soil by Lake Garda, the red varieties Corvina Veronese, Rondinella, and Molinara find ideal conditions for growing Bardolino.

On the tuff stone soils in Verona, the white varieties Garganega, Trebbiano di Soave, and Chardonnay can develop optimally for Soave wine. The most important variety is Garganega, which is required to make up a minimum of 70% of Soave. Between 0 and 30% may be Trebbiano di Soave and/or Chardonnay. In between lies the Valpolicella wine region, where great red wines like Amarone della Valpolicella and Valpolicella Ripasso have their home.

On the southern slopes of the mountains in the small province of Treviso, north of Venice, lie the two wine regions for Prosecco in DOCG quality: Prosecco di Conegliano Valdobbiadene and Colli Asolani-Prosecco. The white variety Glera was known as Prosecco until 2009. With the introduction of Prosecco as a protected designation of origin, the renaming to the historical name Glera followed.

Wineries in Veneto

If you are excited about full-bodied dry red wines with exquisite aromatic richness, it is hard to avoid Amarone della Valpolicella in Veneto. This wine can compete with the best red wines of Italy, such as Barolo from Piedmont and Brunello di Montalcino. Here at VINELLO, you can find these first-class delights, for example from the Costa Arènte winery, with the award "Classico" from the Cecilia winery, and as "Riserva" from the Masi Agricola winery.

Masi Agricola also produces a fruity fine Soave DOC that will delight lovers of dry Italian white wines. If you enjoy this style, you will likely appreciate the Soave DOC from Bolla as well as the Soave DOC from the Latium Morini winery.

A beautiful introduction to the world of red wines from Bardolino, east of Lake Garda, is offered by the Vigneti Villabella winery with its Vigna Morlongo Bardolino Classico DOC. A delicious rosé option is the Bardolino Chiaretto DOC from Azienda Agricola Gorgo.

If you are looking for a top-quality Prosecco Spumante, you will find it at the Bisol winery. The Cartizze Prosecco Superiore and the Crede Prosecco Superiore from the DOCG region of Valdobbiadene delight as lively sparkling wines with pleasantly fruity notes.

Wine Region Veneto

Veneto is a geographically well-structured wine region in northeastern Italy, renowned for the white wines Soave and Soave Riserva, as well as for Prosecco sparkling and semi-sparkling wines. Among the great Italian red wines of the region is Amarone della Valpolicella. 28 DOC wines and 14 DOCG wines come from Veneto, as the region is called in Italian.
