The Scattered Wine Areas of Lombardy

The wine-growing region of Lombardy is home to several top-quality provinces for wine. However, these are widely scattered throughout the northern Italian region. Preferred locations can be found, for example, near the famous lakes. The Franciacorta wine region is located directly south of Lake Iseo. This is where the very popular and exquisite Franciacorta sparkling wines originate. To the east of this central wine area is the beautiful Lake Garda, approximately 50 km from Lake Iseo. From here comes the fresh and fruity Lugana DOC. A splendid white wine, primarily made from the Trebbiano di Soave grape variety. Farther west in Lombardy, near Voghera, lies the largest wine-growing area. Oltrepò Pavese has DOC and DOCG wines. The Spumante here is mostly produced through bottle fermentation. Further north, amid the Alps, the impressive terraces of the Valtellina wine-growing region round off the scattered wine region.

The Lombard Wine Terraces of Valtellina

The wine terraces of Valtellina are located high in the north of Lombardy. They are situated in the province of Sondrio, where they border Switzerland. The wine-growing area of Valtellina is referred to as Veltlin in the Swiss Confederation. During the ripening season, the leaf-green vines, which bear almost exclusively red grapes, stand out against the alpine hills. On a clear blue sky and warm sunshine, this is a pleasing aesthetic experience.

Nebbiolo in Lombardy

In this part of Lombardy, the grape variety Nebbiolo is preferred for cultivation. The demanding red grape variety grows on limestone soils and takes a long time to mature. No grape variety in the world takes longer than Nebbiolo. However, patience pays off - even when the wine is in the bottle. The red wine, with its pronounced acidity, needs some time to fully develop. When the bottle is opened after several years, the noble variety exudes a fruity, fragrant bouquet. Violets, roses, plums, and sometimes berries blend with subtle notes of tar or truffle. On the southern slopes of the Valtellina wine-growing area, the picky grape variety finds very good conditions in Lombardy.

The DOCG Wine from Lombardy

Lombardy boasts top-quality wines. Many wines bear the DOCG quality seal on their labels, as they meet the high standards with flying colors. Some DOCG wines include:

  • Sforzato di Valtellina
  • Valtellina Superiore
  • Franciacorta
  • Oltrepò Pavese Spumante Metodo Classico
  • Oltrepò Pavese Spumante Metodo Classico Pinot Nero
  • Moscato di Scanzo

Spumante – Sparkling Wine from Lombardy

The delightfully bubbly Spumante from the vineyards of the Franciacorta and Oltrepò Pavese regions is internationally renowned. The full flavor of the Spumante unfolds when it is matured through bottle fermentation (Metodo Classico). In total, there are Spumanti that predominantly shimmer straw yellow or impress with a beautiful pink. Lombard sparkling wine sparkles wonderfully, shines on all occasions, and is also an excellent companion for light Italian dishes.

Lombardy in Brief

The wine-growing region of Lombardy is located in northern Italy. It belongs to the namesake region, which is also the most populous in Italy. Lombardy borders the Alps and Switzerland to the north. To the west lies the Italian region of Piedmont, to the east Trentino-South Tyrol and Veneto. The southern Lombardy is characterized by the Po Valley and borders the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna. The Lombard center is the metropolis of Milan. In addition to the beautiful lakes of Lake Garda and Lake Como, the wine-growing region is distinguished by areas such as Oltrepò Pavese, Valtellina, and Franciacorta. Lombardy is known for its sparkling wine and red wine.
