The world of Barbaresco - one of the noblest red wines in Italy. This wine-growing region in Piedmont captivates wine enthusiasts with its diverse aromas and a unique history.

Barbaresco: A Historic Place

The origins of Barbaresco date back to the 19th century. The first dry wines were vinified by Louis Oudart in 1862 at the Castello di Neive estate. The municipality of Neive joined the Barbaresco area in 1933, which enabled the quality improvement of the wine offerings in this region.

Regional Specialties of Barbaresco

The vineyards of Barbaresco extend over 500 hectares and are spread across several municipalities. The main ones are:

  • Barbaresco
  • Neive
  • Treiso
  • Alba (partially San Rocco Seno d’Elvio)

Many geographical designations can be found on labels, adding extra charm to the wines.

Terroir: Unique Conditions for Noble Drops

The soil of Barbaresco consists of calcareous marl that provides the grapes with tannins and acids. These climatic conditions allow for earlier grape ripening. The result is a milder, less robust wine, which is regarded as the “little brother of Barolo”.

Grape Varieties in Barbaresco

Barbaresco is vinified exclusively from the Nebbiolo grape. The wines exhibit impressive depth and complexity, making them a true delicacy for the palate. They typically have an aging potential of five to ten years.

Classification and Vinification

The DOC classification was established in 1966, and the DOCG recognition occurred in 1980. Barbaresco wines must have a minimum alcohol content of 12.5% vol and age for at least 26 months, while the Riserva must age even longer for 50 months, including 9 months in wooden barrels.
