Acolon - Young Wine from Württemberg

Acolon is a purely fanciful name, as parents are nowadays. The crossing of Dornfelder and Lemberger - two giants of viticulture in Württemberg - inherited the strengths of both and has much more to offer. Floral scented like the Dornfelder, remarkably structured like a Lemberger, Acolon is spicy, dark red, and a fresh development of German red wine.

Whether for varietal and barrel-aged red wines, as a component in red wine blends, or even as a sparkling rosé, Acolon presents itself to the winemaker. The early-ripening grape variety always yields good harvests and notable must weight, with tannins holding back somewhat. Its deep dark color with violet reflections testifies to its long structure, its aroma reminiscent of Dornfelder - spicy and full of forest fruits. A sip of Acolon embodies hints of currants, blackberries, cherries, and blueberries. A barrel-aged Acolon wine immediately brings notes of vanilla, tobacco, and cloves along.

Acolon is a new breed from Weinsberg, which occupied only a few areas for experimental purposes in 1971. Much was tested, bred, and done until 2002 when the Federal Plant Variety Office granted Acolon varietal approval. Since then, the cultivation area has expanded from about 76 hectares in 2001 to nearly 500 hectares. And what previously thrived only around Weinsberg has now found a place in the vineyards of Württemberg, the Palatinate, Rheinhessen, and Franconia.

Food Recommendation for Acolon Wine

Hearty as well as light meat dishes suit Acolon red wine very well, especially with onion roast beef and spaetzle, Acolon shines in the highest form.
