Variety Italian - Sangiovese

Sangiovese is a powerful grape variety, for everyone, for you, for all of us. Whether as a smooth table wine or an opulent top wine. Find pure Italian Sangiovese red wine or a harmonious cuvée at VINELLO, your wine retailer for purplish-red diversity.

Blood of Jupiter

Sangiovese, sanguis juvis, blood of Jupiter. Blood that flows in every Italian, from Apulia to Tuscany. No other red wine holds a higher status, none is vinified so extensively and nobly. On over 100,000 hectares, the fleshy grapes line the hills. Sangiovese is the leading variety in Italy, as it has quickly been recognized what potential lies within the grape variety. As the base for the most famous wines, this round red wine leads to a variety of creations. The most famous cuvée is undoubtedly the Chianti. This very fruity wine is blended with a splash of Canaiolo for the dark color. Depending on the wine type, at least 70% Sangiovese is in the elegant body. This alone is enough to underline the significance of Sangiovese wine. However, this alone does not do justice to the red wine. As a solo performer, the Italian wine possesses a unique character, which it promises with its brick-red body.

Sangiovese Wine Taste

The Sangiovese wine is as diverse as its character. While young wines reveal hints of cherries, berries, and floral aromas of iris and violets, older Italian red wines aged in wooden barrels express a bouquet of plums, blackberries, underbrush, tobacco, and leather. This fundamentally dry red wine shines bright red in the glass and has a pronounced structure with a high acidity and tannin content. Sangiovese is typically dry but is also vinified as rosé, sparkling wine, and dessert wine. One grape, multiple possibilities. This is also a reason why Sangiovese is often chosen as a blending partner.

There are many such cuvées. The Chianti Classico with at least 80% Sangiovese, the Chianti DOCG, Vino Nobile, and Rosso Montepulciano contain at least 70%, but also pure varietal options like Brunello or Rosso di Montalcino convince as absolute top wines. The innovative treasures from Tuscany should not be missed in a list of quality wines. Supertuscans, with a strong influence of French winemaking, are predominantly combined with the deep red Merlot as well as Cabernet Sauvignon. The best wine characteristics of traditional red wines combined - and on top of that, creates a unique holiday feeling in the glass.

The Heritage of the Etruscans - The Origin of Sangiovese

Where Sangiovese originally comes from is still not documented today. Many small rural regions claim to know the origin. However, nothing has been proven so far. Speculations suggest that the Etruscans already cultivated Sangiovese. Therefore, it is assumed to be an autochthonous grape variety from Italy.

For a long time, a distinction was also made between Sangiovese grosso and Sangiovese piccolo, as the grapes appeared large and small in different locations. When winemakers planted the small-growing grapes in areas with large-growing grapes, it was quickly realized that it was the same grape variety. The small grapes grew large.

Sangiovese has been found everywhere in Italy for centuries. Core areas are Tuscany and parts of Emilia-Romagna and Marche. Outside of Italy, Australian red wines are recommended. Sangiovese enjoys cult status here.

Our Sangiovese Wine Recommendation

  • Avi Sangiovese di Romagna Superiore Riserva DOC - San Patrignano

Pure varietal, dark red, with characteristic violet aroma. The Avi Sangiovese di Romagna Superiore Riserva DOC impresses with fully ripe flavor and dense structure. The fruity bouquet of intense berries and spicy notes of cloves, nutmeg, and cedar wood makes this oak-aged red wine a harmonious treat for the palate.

  • Chianti DOCG 1.0 l - Villa Albinoni

A Chianti DOCG, typically fruity and soft. Diverse berry aromas combine with a pleasant acidity. The vines grown on dry, clayey, and calcareous soils are carefully destemmed by the winemakers of Villa Albinoni after a selective harvest and fermented in stainless steel tanks. A noble Chianti red wine at a fair price - a fine top wine to enjoy.

Interesting Facts about Sangiovese

What is Sangiovese?

Sangiovese is an Italian grape variety primarily cultivated in Tuscany. The red wine serves as a base for many cuvées, providing the compositions with fruit and a high acidity and tannin content. The name Sangiovese, also known as Brunello, Calabrese, Montepulciano, or Prugnolo, refers to the Latin term sanguis jovis, which translates to blood of Jupiter.

How to Store Sangiovese Wine?

Red wine should generally be stored cool, dark, and lying down. Large temperature fluctuations should be avoided. Sangiovese is excellent for long-term storage. The Supertuscan or Brunello variants can be stored for up to 20 years. A Chianti for 3-4 years and Vino Nobile for 5-8 years.

How long does an opened bottle of Sangiovese last?

After the bottle has been closed again with the cork and placed in the refrigerator, Sangiovese lasts up to 5 days after opening. One should avoid contact with oxygen as much as possible. This means the emptier the bottle, the shorter the wine lasts. Using a wine pump can remove the oxygen from the bottle, but simply transferring it to a smaller container also works to store opened wine longer.

What goes well with Sangiovese Red Wine?

It pairs well with pasta, pizza, and the entire Italian cuisine and Mediterranean dishes.

How to Drink Sangiovese?

Enjoy your Sangiovese red wine at a drinking temperature of 16°C to unleash its full potential.
