Lemberger – an indigenous grape variety

In Germany, Württemberg is by far the most important winegrowing region for Lemberger wine with 1600 hecatres of vineyards. 

Lemberger is an early-ripening grape variety. Because the Lemberger grapevine also buds early in spring, there is danger of frost, which makes a wind-protected location and a mild climate absolutely necessary for a successful harvest. For the cooler-climate German vintners this means that Lemberger grapes can only fully ripen in good, sloped or terraced locations.

Depending upon the time of the wine harvest, Lemberger grapes can produce both light, fresh red wines, as well as robust, tannin-rich wines with pleasant fruity notes of berries and cherry and a deep red colour.

Lemberger wines generally exhibit pronounced maturation potential. 
While they are often used to produce varietal wines, Lemberger grapes are also very popular in cuvees together with grape varieties such as Trollinger, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir  to lend these wines fruitiness and complexity.
