Cabernet Sauvignon (1.877)

The Cabernet Sauvignon is among the most famous and noble red wines in the world, which is why it is also referred to as a noble grape.

The cradle of the Cabernet Sauvignon vine most likely stood in the Bordeaux region of France. From here, it embarked on its victorious journey to the whole (wine) world. Currently, the cultivation area of Cabernet Sauvignon is nearly 200,000 hectares worldwide, and in recent times it has also been increasingly cultivated overseas. In Germany, nearly 300 hectares are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, with the largest areas located in the Pfalz region.

An Unmistakable Character

Cabernet Sauvignon wines are characterized by the typical smell and taste of blackcurrants. Furthermore, these wines generally have a deep dark red color and possess a supporting framework of tannins and acids. A particular feature of Cabernet Sauvignon is that it retains its unmistakable character even outside its homeland - almost independent of soil and climate conditions.

Diverse Aromas

Young Cabernet Sauvignon wines taste - marked by tannins - slightly bitter and rough, are fruity, and have a strong aroma of freshly cut wood. As it matures, a good Cabernet Sauvignon impresses with fine toasting aromas, a variety of black berry aromas, and sometimes aromas of green pepper and licorice. When the Cabernet Sauvignon grape can fully ripen, it results in complex, tannin-rich wines that captivate with the finesse of their aromas.

Cabernet Sauvignon - A World-Class Wine

The international success of Cabernet Sauvignon is closely linked to the Bordeaux wine region, although it is relatively rarely produced as a single varietal here. Typically, in Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon is blended with the grape varieties Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and to a lesser extent with Petit Verdot.

Since at least the 1960s, there has been an effort worldwide to replicate the clear yet not overly heavy structure and high complexity of a typical Bordeaux wine.

In Tuscany and California, the best single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon wines are produced. In California, the single-varietal production is considered the highest level of refinement for Cabernet Sauvignon, creating world-class wines.
