More information about San Giorgio Rosso dell' Umbria IGT - Tenuta di Torgiano

The San Giorgio Umbria Rosso IGT - Tenuta di Torgiano by Lungarotti is a robust red wine suitable for long storage.
In the glass, the San Giorgio is deep ruby red with intense violet nuances that change to garnet red as it matures. A dense, complex and rich bouquet unfolds on the nose, with aromas of red jam, plum jam, cassis and blueberry, and sweet spices of cinnamon and cocoa, balsamic notes and mint in the background. On the palate, this red "Super Umbrian" impresses with a powerful structure and very present hints of red fruits, extraordinarily concentrated and harmonious, with dense, ripe, warm and juicy tannins for a full and multi-layered taste. The finish is remarkably long, engaging with a pleasant freshness in the aftertaste.

Vinification of the San Giorgio Umbria Rosso IGT Tenuta di Torgiano by Lungarotti

This wine can be described as the first "Super Umbrian" and is the result of Giorgio Lungarotti's passion for experimentation, who wanted to try out an unusual cuvée in 1977.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Canajolo are vinified together for San Giorgio. The proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon emphasizes the character of the Sangiovese without overpowering it. The Cabernet grapes grow on medium-heavy, slightly calcareous soils with tufa and good skeleton, while the Sangiovese grapes come from a part of the Vigna Monticchio, with very variable soil in which clay and sandy layers alternate several times. The grapes are harvested by hand in mid-September.
Maceration on the skins takes place in stainless steel tanks for 25 to 28 days, after which the wine is matured in barriques for a year. After light filtration and bottling, the wine matures in the bottle for at least 6 years before being released for sale.

The San Giorgio has a potential of several decades if stored well.

Dining recommendations for the San Giorgio Umbria Rosso IGT Tenuta di Torgiano from Lungarotti

Enjoy this robust, top-class wine as the perfect accompaniment to roasted and braised meat, game, wild boar ragout, stews, rustic regional dishes, spicy, mature cheeses and fondue.
The wine should be opened and decanted 1 to 2 hours before serving so that its intense flavor can fully develop. A large red wine goblet and a serving temperature of 16 to 18°C are recommended.
