Kerner Wine - Simply Wonderful

Some wines take themselves seriously, while Kerner takes it easy. The fruity wine with vital acidity delights as a simple wine at every wine festival. Whether as a wine spritzer or spätlese - Kerner white wine doesn't impose and does what wine is supposed to do: taste good.

The Origin of the Kerner Grape Variety

The Kerner grape variety is mainly grown in Germany. Of course, this is where it comes from. More specifically, from Lauffen am Neckar. In an outstation of the State Teaching and Research Institute for Wine and Fruit Cultivation (LVWO), Kerner was cultivated in 1929. The variety, formerly known as Herold white, is a crossing of the red Trollinger and the white Riesling. The idea to cross these two grape varieties came from August Herold - hence the name.

Today, the grape variety is almost exclusively known as Kerner and is named after the Swabian poet, physician, and writer Justinus Kerner. He spent many years of his creative life in Weinsberg, the home of the LVWO.

Wine with Character - Kerner

Kerner wine resembles Silvaner and in some cases even Riesling. In its straw-yellow, juicy body, nutty and fruity aromas combine. Pear, apricot, green apple, and musk form the flavor profile. Kerner wines have a lively acidity and are popular in the growing regions as "Schoppen" wines. Especially on hot days, a Kerner wine spritzer is a refreshing and light choice.

Mainly Grown in Germany

Kerner is mainly grown in Germany, with smaller cultivation areas found in Italy and Switzerland. Within Germany, there are about 2,700 hectares under Kerner vine. Rheinhessen, Pfalz, and Württemberg are noteworthy wine regions in this regard. In recent years, the cultivation area has been declining, although this does not deter some winemakers from creating excellent wines from the Kerner grape.
