Picpoul is on trend

Picpoul has always been a popular blending partner for French winegrowers, especially for the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines. Piquepoul Blanc is still irreplaceable for Cognac and Armagnac. The grape variety could be found in almost all wine regions of France until Ugni Blanc was able to convince winegrowers of its advantages as a mass carrier and cuvée grape. Phylloxera then almost caused the complete loss of the extremely acidic and vitamin-rich grapes. But in the very south of France, in the Languedoc, Picpoul found a new career that made the entire wine world sit up and take notice. 

The lip-biter

From Sète, the little Venice of Languedoc, to Montagnac, the Picpoul de Pinet AOC appellation stretches along the Étang de Thau with around 1,400 hectares of vineyards. There, the vines enjoy lush sunshine and the salty Mediterranean winds that blow over the calcareous clay and sandy soils. The high temperatures are moderated by the wind, while at night the heat-retaining Étang de Thau lagoon protects the vines from sharp drops in temperature. In these conditions, the Picpoul grape variety shines and, in addition to floral aromas, produces the strongest acidity of all grapes. One sip of Picpoul de Pinet and you will understand why Picpoul means lip-biter or lip-stealer.

The powerful effervescence of Picpoul de Pinet has made the white wine extremely popular in the port towns of Languedoc, as oysters are a favorite dish of the local population. The salty seafood harmonizes with the acidity of the wine to create a delicious and fresh meal. This is because acidity protects against oxidation, and cognac is not sulphurized. The acidic base wine thus forms the basis for the later smooth variety of aromas, which is perfected through several distillation processes.
