Grecanico Wines (14)

Grecanico produces fresh, slender white wines with aromas of fruit and herbs, lemons and almonds that are vaguely reminiscent of French Sauvignon Blanc. They go well with light meals and are a pleasure on their own, especially in the warmer months.

Origin and current occurrence of Grecanico

The white grape Grecanico (Dorato) is a very old grape variety that is cultivated under this name in Sicily, almost exclusively in the province of Trapani. The region on the west coast of Sicily is characterized by a dry, hot climate. The origin of the grape is not known. It was probably brought to the island by the ancient Greeks long before the Romans colonized it. However, no genetic relationship with known Greek grape varieties has yet been established.

Grecanico pure and as a blended wine

As a grape variety, Grecanico is identical to Garganega, a name that is probably better known among wine lovers. As Garganega, the grape is mainly cultivated in Italy in the Veneto region, but also in Umbria and Lombardy. In terms of quantity, Grecanico ranks sixth among the white grape varieties grown in Italy. It is also grown in Croatia, Spain and in the New World in Argentina and Brazil.

The late-ripening grape delivers high yields. If it is pruned consistently, quite dense wines can be produced, otherwise the result remains neutral in taste and thin in stature. Some producers have been working more intensively with this indigenous grape for some time now and are eliciting new possibilities from it.

Grecanico is a light, dry white wine from Sicily that is perfect with seafood, fish, white meat, pasta, risotto or simply to enjoy on the balcony, terrace or in the garden in summer. This ancient indigenous grape variety was probably brought to the Mediterranean island and cultivated by the ancient Greeks. The grape is also used as a blend in well-known wines such as Soave.

In addition to the production of single-varietal wines, Grecanico is also used as a blend wine for Soave, Colli Berici, Gambellara, Colli Euganei or Alcamo DOC. Grape varieties with which Grecanico is blended include

- Chardonnay

- Cataratto Bianco Comune

- Cataratto Bianco Lucido

- Inzolia

- Viognier

- Fiano

- Grillo

Synonyms

In addition to Garganega (Bianca, Comune, di Gambellara, Gentile, Grossa, Piramidale, Veronese), there are numerous other synonyms for Grecanico, including

- Grecanico Bianco

- Grecenicu Biancu

- Recanicu

- Garganega Bijela (Croatia)

- Malvasía de Manresa (Spain)
