Ingrid Groiss - natural viticulture from Breitenwaida
The Ingrid Groiss winery is located in the village of Breitenwaida, about 40 km north of Vienna, in the well-known wine-growing region of Weinviertel. The estate is managed by the winemaker of the same name. Ingrid Groiss had initially chosen a different career path, but she was quite quickly drawn back to her family roots, which lie in viticulture.
Vineyards and sites of Ingrid Groiss
Ingrid Groiss grows various grape varieties in her vineyards, including for example:
- Grüner Veltliner
- Riesling
- Rotgipfler
- Müller-Thurgau
- Chardonnay
The winery has sites in Breitenwaia, in Pulkautal in Haugsdorf and in Fahndorf near Ziersdorf. The sites are distinguished by their respective typical character and form the basis for various wines:
Breitenwaida
Here are the top sites of the winery Ingrid Groiss. They bear the names Pankraz and Sauberg and are characterized by soils of limestone marl, gravel and primary rock, interspersed with admixtures of quartz and pebble slate. Due to this terroir, the wines of these sites are expressive and mineral. The grapes for the single-vineyard wines Sauberg Tradition and Pankraz Reserve come from these vineyards.
Haugsdorf
This site is completely dedicated to the "Riesling of Austria", the Grüner Veltliner. It thrives here on soils on loess with gravel, quite typical of the Weinviertel.
Fahndorf
This site has poor conglomerate and gravel soils, which are interspersed with quartz and sandstone. On them grow vines, which are 50 years old. Accordingly, the yield of the vines is quite low, but due to their age they have very deep roots, which allow them a water and nutrient supply, which is not found in the other vines of the estate. As a result, the grapes have a complex aroma spectrum with their own characteristics. From them, for example, the Gemischter Satz and the Riesling Reserve "Auf der Henne" are vinified.
Ingrid Groiss attaches great importance to the sustainability of the cultivation of her vineyards. Thus, she sees herself as an observer of her vines in order to recognize what the vine needs. Loose soils with good aeration, enough foliage for supply and in return a good amount of yield and above all time for ripening all contribute to good grape quality. The winery is certified organic.
The cellar of Ingrid Groiss - preserver instead of doer
In the cellar, Ingrid Groiss relies mainly on stainless steel tanks to vinify and age her wines in a controlled manner. The cellar is a balancing act between modern technology where it is needed and leaving the wines close to nature by not unnecessarily influencing the aging process. For some special wines, wooden barrels are also available to give them that special touch. The philosophy is to produce wines that are typical of their variety, elegant and profound. Ingrid Groiss sees her wines as an expression of the region, which is why they should develop as close to nature as possible. The wine should be less "made" than "preserved".
