More information about Brunello di Montalcino DOCG - Tenuta il Poggione

The Brunello di Montalcino DOCG from Tenuta il Poggione from the Italian wine-growing region of Tuscany is an excellent, seductive and wonderfully complex red wine made exclusively from the Sangiovese grape variety.

This wine shines in the glass in a dense ruby red with purple highlights. On the nose, this red wine is very intense, long-lasting, with concentrated fruit notes of dark and red berries - blackberries and raspberries in particular come to the fore - ripe sour cherries and a subtle spicy note with a hint of tobacco. On the palate, this Italian red wine starts off very elegant, warm, balanced, with velvety soft tannins and a surprisingly fresh note. The tannins are very well integrated into the complex body and are accompanied by a balanced acidity structure. The finish has a wonderful, persistent length.

This Brunello di Montalcino from Tenuta Il Poggione impresses across the board with its complex, great character and has very good ageing potential.

Vinification of Tenuta il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello is the king of wines in Montalcino. This red wine is vinified exclusively from Sangiovese grapes from the estate's oldest vineyards. After a gentle, temperature-controlled fermentation, the Brunello di Montalcino from Tenuta Il Poggione matures for 30 months in 30 hl and 50 hl French oak barrels, followed by two years of ageing in the bottle before this royal Italian red wine is released onto the market.

Recommendation for the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG from Tenuta Il Poggione

Enjoy this wonderful, powerful Brunello from Italy with braised beef rump in a dark sauce, glazed pork belly, roast leg of rabbit or mature cheeses.

Awards for the Tenuta il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino

  • Robert Parker: 94+ points for 2017

"The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino opens to a saturated and shiny dark ruby color. This edition is loaded with black and purple fruits, such as blackberry preserves and plum. Those more robust tones are followed by spice, tar and campfire ash. The tannins are young (but not stemmy or bitter), and you'd be best served by letting this wine age and relax with more cellar aging. Il Poggione always makes some of the smoothest and most texturally enriched wines in the appellation, and this vintage is no exception."

  • Antonio Galloni: 93 points for 2017
  • Jancis Robinson: 17/20 points for 2017
  • Wine Spectator: 93 points for 2017
  • Robert M. Parker - The Wine Advocate: 94 points for 2014
  • Wine Spectator: 92 points for 2014
  • James Suckling: 91 points for 2014
  • Wine Enthusiast: 91 points for 2014
